The Ice Giant World is a cave labyrinth of more than 40 kilometres of total length. The development took place over a very long period of time. The first crevices and fissures in the limestone rock were created in the course of the mountain lifts about 100 million years ago. Due to chemical dissolution processes and water erosion over thousands of years, the underground fissures widened and large cavities were formed. The caves in the Alps are still in a process of development, although many cave systems – even large parts of the ice giant world – no longer develop significantly due to dehydration.
